Marketing Tip #1:
Everyone operates in a "sphere of influence." Marketing gurus define that as the family, friends and associates with whom a person normally associates in the course of doing their life. Your customers each have a sphere of influence and each member of that group is another potential customer. Don't be afraid to use specials, coupons, referral fees and discount services for your customer's family members (remember MCI's Friends and Family Program?), friends and business associates. Offer Gift Certificates for all the major holidays and even fun holidays that you create yourself (e.g., Pegasus Commemoration Day, National Horsefeathers Day, Lady Godiva's Birthday). Create your own interesting theme that people will be drawn to. Give them extra reasons to refer you!

Marketing Tip #2:
A web presence that directs customers to you is a "must have" in today's marketplace. Used effectively, it can be a powerful way to build your customer base. Online, you can create a virtual community where you publish information that your customers might be seeking. One way to do this is to create a newsletter where you feature one of your equine 'clients' each month. Publishing a newsletter on your site can save you printing and mailing costs. Don't have a website? YEHA offers an image-rich web page option that can help get you started or enhance an already existing web presence. Your personal page on YEHA can be customized to your business and updated anytime so you can post new articles, successful case studies and special promotions. It's a great way to introduce yourself to new customers while better serving the ones you have!

Marketing Tip #3:
When people talk of “marketing” most are thinking advertisements and Yellow Pages, trade shows, flyers, etc. But these are actually tools and opportunities for marketing. The term “marketing” means much, much more than placing an ad and waiting to see if customers respond. By definition, marketing is “Anything that influences the exchange of dollars for services or products.” Wow…by that definition, almost everything you do in a business is marketing! Well, in truth, that’s exactly right. Expand your idea of marketing to include how you answer the phone, what message you leave on your answering machine, how you follow up and respond to customers, how your staff treats your clients, your follow-up techniques and what you offer your customers to keep them satisfied.

Business Development Tip:
Network with your competitors. Drop them a line or give them a call, introduce your services and let them know that you're building your business and are open to handling overflow. Be willing to offer an initial referral fee for any business they send your way. Get listed in the YEHA Directory so others can find you.
